Making Canned Peaches and Pears

As the summer comes to a close, I get into a canning/preserving mode!!! Last week we made homemade dill pickles and this weekend we canned peaches and pears!! This is another one of my grandma’s specialties!! See below the easy method to make such a delicious year round treat!

This time my son Carson was not the best of helps. This time all he wanted me to do was keep cutting the fruit, so he could eat it on me!! ….”More mommy, more please” Carson kept saying!…. I could not say “no” to his sweet face!

Canning peaches and pears is actually quite easy. The only time consuming part is peeling the fruit, and cutting it into your desired slices/sizes….I have yet to find a way to master that! Wink

This year we got 6L of peaches, and 6L of pears.
For liquid we required 4 “batches”. –> A batch is 1 cup of sugar for every 2 – 2 1/2 cups of water.
I elected to do 1 cup of sugar for every 2 1/2 cups of water as I think fruit is already sweet, and well, it’s always good to watch our sugar intake!

Peaches and pears can be made separately, on their own, or how I like to make them….together!!

How to make canned peaches and pears:

Peel the fruit and put into a large pot and fill with water just to cover the fruit. (remember the water to sugar ratio mentioned above as you are filling with water)
Bring the fruit and liquid to a boil. Once the fruit is softened you are able to start filling your jars!!

NOTE: Too much water and you will end up having tons of juice left over at the end. I had made the perfect amount….which is a good thing/bad thing! Great that it filled the jars perfectly (only one pear didn’t make it into the jar), however, bad thing as I was hoping there would be some “left” that didn’t fit so that I could enjoy it right away.

Canning peaches and pears was a great success! They can be enjoyed anytime that you would like. I like to make this so that I can easily make a fruit salad with fresh fruit that I have on hand. Smile
Tip–mark the month/year you made it on the lid, that way you ensure as time goes on (and you make more) that you are eating the ones you made first…..first!!!

My grandma is no longer around, but I’m sure she’s in spirit with me all the time! Hope I’m making you proud grandma!! <3
